According to research by online ad research group Dynamic Logic, quality online creative is critical to the success of digital advertising campaigns. The research reveals that creative quality is 50% to 75% responsible for the success or failure of digital campaigns.

“There is no doubt that online ads could be far more effective and that outstanding photography and illustrations could certainly make a real difference,” said Daniele Fiandaca, Founder of Creative Social and former European Chief Executive of Profero, a leading global digital ad agency. “Corbis is recognized for having an incredible collection of stock photos and illustrations, and it’s fantastic that the design community is now able to license them so affordably.”

Corbis Images’ Web and Mobile images are priced according to pixel size, license model and price tier. For royalty free (RF) images, Corbis Images is offering one simple 400 pixel file size ranging from $5 to $20. For rights-managed images (RM), Corbis Images is offering two files sizes – 400 and 600 pixels – with prices ranging from $15 to $60. Creatives can now use Corbis Images’ award-winning creative and editorial imagery collections in their smallest web and mobile uses with minimal manipulation or resizing, for an affordable price. The Web and Mobile resolution files sizes continue to offer customers indemnification and high levels of rights control.

“Creative and media professionals no longer have to settle for lower quality stock photos or illustrations when creating ad creative or publishing on the web or for mobile applications,” said Rajiv Jain, CTO and SVP/GM of CorbisImages.com. “Our new web and mobile resolution file sizes of our world-renowned photos and illustrations are the perfect fit at an affordable price, and people now have the opportunity to demonstrate their best creative work online.”

Quality, affordable imagery will be specifically relevant for advertising and publishing on emerging mobile devices and tablets. With the instant success of Apple’s iPad(TM), there will be an increase in demand for premium quality images at a low price point, in different sizes and formats, to use in digital magazines, and advertisements.

Demand to use imagery online continues to grow rapidly along with the growth in digital advertising. According to research company Outsell Inc., U.S. advertisers will this year spend more on digital than print advertising for the first time. Spending on Web sites and other digital media will jump 9.6 percent to $119.6 billion, taking 33 percent of the overall advertising market, with print making up 30 percent of the market.

NEW YORK, March 11 /PRNewswire/ — Photobook industry leader MyPublisher announced today the addition of famed storytelling photographer Rick Smolan to its editorial team.

Smolan joins MyPublisher as a consulting editor. He will advise the company on trends in consumer and professional photography and digital technology. Also, Smolan will counsel MyPublisher on selecting user-generated content to be displayed at www.mypublisher.com. In addition to his work as consulting editor, Smolan will create a Photobook including some of his favorite photographs to display on the MyPublisher website.

“Rick knows everybody in the photography world, both on the technological side and on the artistic side. He has his ear to the ground and can give us information that no one else has access to,” said Carl Navarre, CEO and founder of MyPublisher.

Smolan added: “Professional photographers don’t make 4×6 prints anymore – they make complete Photobooks that tell the story of their vacation or their wedding or their daughter’s magical fifth birthday party. MyPublisher was the company that launched this entire new trend and many professional photographers, including myself, believe they offer the best software, the best product, and the best customer service. I am honored and excited to be working with MyPublisher because I passionately believe this is the future of photography and I want to see it continue to grow.”

Smolan, a former Time, Life and National Geographic photographer, is best known as the creator of the Day in the Life and America 24/7 series. He is president of Against All Odds Productions, which specializes in the design and execution of large-scale global projects that combine compelling storytelling with state-of-the-art technology. Many of his books have appeared on the New York Times best-seller lists and have also appeared on the covers of Time, Newsweek, Fortune and U.S. News and World Report. More than five million of Smolan’s books adorn coffee tables around the world; titles include The Obama Time Capsule, Blue Planet Run, America at Home, UK at Home, 24 Hours in Cyberspace, The Power to Heal, Passage to Vietnam, One Digital Day, and From Alice to Ocean.

The 15th edition of the guide to Australia is officially the 100 millionth book to be published in Lonely Planet’s 37 year history.

To celebrate, Lonely Planet will launch a competition on January 29, 2009 to encourage travelers to share their favorite travel images and be in the running to win a round-the-world trip for two, or one of 200 Nokia handsets valued at around $740US. Travelers will be able to upload their travel images via lonelyplanet.com/win.

Lonely Planet’s co-founder, Tony Wheeler, said shared travel experiences are at the heart of everything Lonely Planet does. “And this is why we decided to reach out to our travel community with a competition to build the world’s largest online mosaic of travel images to support us having published 100 million guidebooks.

“Pictures are a wonderful way to tell a story. They can celebrate memories of travel and capture the essence of our experiences. Over the years, Maureen and I have taken thousands of pictures around the world, and they’re an important part of our travel history.

“I’m delighted and amazed that we’ve published 100 million books, but the real cause for celebration is the hundreds of millions of shared travel stories experienced by Lonely Planet travelers. Sharing those stories is something we’ve been encouraging for decades,” Tony Wheeler said.

Lonely Planet CEO Matt Goldberg said the milestone of publishing 100 million books was an opportunity to reflect on how the company has evolved as a multi-media travel publisher.

“Lonely Planet serves an amazing global community of like-minded travel enthusiasts who, not only buy our books, but also enjoy accessing travel content, information, and services online and wirelessly, as well as through TV and magazines.

“This milestone is not about us; it’s about you. We would never have reached our 100 millionth publication without the goodwill of a loyal travel community who have enthusiastically shared their experiences with Lonely Planet out of the pure joy of travel and to help all travelers on their next journey.

“We hope everyone enjoys sharing their favorite travel images in our effort to build the world’s largest online mosaic of travel photography,” Matt Goldberg said.

You don’t have to be a professional photographer to enter. Entries will be judged on how your story – a combination of an image and a caption – captures the adventurous free spirit of Lonely Planet and getting to the heart of a place.

Tony Wheeler on Lonely Planet’s 100 million books and sharing travel stories:
Tony shares his thoughts on Lonely Planet achieving its 100 millionth book milestone and what sharing travel stories means to him on location filming ‘Lonely Planet: Roads Less Travelled’ in Alaska. You can view it here.

“We invited feedback in our very first books and soon began to include the useful warning that ‘Things change – prices go up, good places go bad, bad places go bankrupt – so if you find things better or worse, recently opened or long ago closed, please write and tell us’. Our travelers have taken that statement seriously, from the very beginning we’ve been supported by thousands of travelers who have written invaluable letters about their experiences.

“The phrase hadn’t been invented yet, but in 1981 Lonely Planet made its first foray into ‘user generated content’ by sending out a quarterly newsletter incorporating information from Lonely Planet travelers and writers out on the road.

“Our newsletter compilers evolved into today’s Talk2Us team, the connection to our travelers and an attempt to be more responsive to their feedback and to develop better ways of incorporating it into our planning for new editions.

“The Thorntree was born in 1996 – likely the first example of a vibrant traveler community on the web – and moved us into the era of online traveler conversations with the ever-growing Lonely Planet community. Today there are close to three quarters of a million Thorntree users and a new post goes up every 12 seconds.

“Today we’re a multi-media travel publisher – content from our guides feeds into the world’s media – you only have to look at the amount of attention Best In Travel 2010 has already received in international media; into research and inspiration for the Lonely Planet Magazine, our award winning television programs, mobile devices and licensing deals across the globe and, of course, our website, lonelyplanet.com”

Atlanta, GA (Vocus/PRWEB ) October 30, 2009 — While many photographers dream of seeing their images on a national magazine’s cover, that dream rarely comes true, but for Shan Canfield in Nashville, Tenn. (also known as Mama Shan), it will in November. Mama Shan won Professional Photographer’s Cover Contest–open to all photographers–beating out almost 4,600 other entries from around the world.

Along with Shan, 20 other photographers from the 2009 Cover Contest will be recognized in Professional Photographer’s November issue: five top finishers and 16 honorable mentions. Narrowing the entries was difficult, as all wowed the judges with their real-world portrait, wedding, commercial, and event photography. Many of the images also met the technical requirements for a cover, including vertical orientation, composition that allows for the masthead, immediate impact and a subject relevant to the readers.

“On the cover, printed at 300 dpi at 9.5×11 inches, every little thing in the image shows up,” explains guest judge, Helen Yancy, M.Photog.M.Artist.MEI.Cr.Hon.M.Photog., CPP, API, F-ASP. “Cover images need to be nearly perfect…and the quality of the entries this year was amazing. It was tough to come up with the finalists.”

While only Shan will have her image seen on the November cover, she and the other finalists also will take home prizes from contest sponsors Bogen Imaging, Canon, Kodak Professional, Emotion Media and White House Custom Colour (WHCC).

The companion volume to the twelve-hour PBS series from the acclaimed filmmaker behind The Civil War, Baseball, and The War. In this evocative and lavishly illustrated narrative, on sale September 8th, 2009, Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan delve into the history of the park idea, from the first sighting by white men in 1851 of the valley that would become Yosemite and the creation of the world’s first national park at Yellowstone in 1872, through the most recent additions to a system that now encompasses nearly four hundred sites and 84 million acres.

United States of America (Press Release) August 4, 2009 — Established stock photography company PhotoEdit Inc. has published the results from its first-ever student survey. Conducted for several months in spring and early summer 2009 at the request of a client, the survey questioned 284 high school students in the local area about their thoughts concerning the stock photos in their textbooks.

PhotoEdit, which maintains a focus upon multi-ethnic educational images, was primarily interested in discovering whether the students thought the textbook photos were applicable to their lives and their curricula. The responding students found many of the images helpful, but found that others were “not helpful, boring, from another century, unrelated to my life,” or all four.

The full results are available in a free PDF which will hopefully be useful for all stock agencies and stock photographers, as it offers insight into the minds of the end users. Anyone interested in the research can have the PDF file sent directly to them absolutely free of charge simply by emailing PhotoEdit’s content manager at mike.margol@photoeditinc.com and asking for it.

Additionally, in response to the survey results, PhotoEdit was motivated to create a brand new collection called Images That Teach. Consisting of 12 subject-specific galleries, the collection was designed with learning in mind: the images can help students of all ages understand concrete concepts in math, language, science, and other disciplines. The new collection also features the ethnic diversity that PhotoEdit is known for.

The galleries can be accessed from PhotoEdit’s homepage at http://www.photoeditinc.com and also from a direct link at http://www.photoeditinc.com/imagesthatteach/main.htm.

PhotoEdit hopes that the PDF and new Images That Teach collection will be helpful not only to stock agencies and photographers, but also to the publishers in the textbook field.
